Indigenous development – community and business

ACIL Tasman has provided liaison and advice to Aboriginal communities, government agencies and companies on a wide range of matters related to Indigenous issues.

ACIL Tasman has detailed understanding of the economic and social circumstances of Indigenous people in Australia, and the policies of governments, combined with on-the-ground experience of Indigenous communities and businesses in both urban and remote locations.  ACIL Tasman specialises in the development of sustainable economic activity, helping Indigenous communities, families and individuals to build relationships with the private sector.

Our work spans regional economic scoping studies to identify sustainable business opportunities, market and feasibility studies for new businesses, detailed business planning, and business and community governance.  ACIL Tasman has advised on development of diverse Indigenous businesses including construction and contracting, labour hire, technical education, transport, agriculture, carbon management and tourism.

Regional partnerships

Regional partnerships between Indigenous organisations, governments and business are increasingly used to underpin comprehensive, region-wide approaches to Indigenous development. ACIL Tasman has in-depth experience in designing, facilitating and managing regional partnerships. The following projects provide examples of our work:

  • design of new approaches to agreements
  • regional economic development
  • business planning for local indigenous development corporations
  • corporate partnership to support business development
  • governance arrangements in local organisations
  • regional infrastructure plan
  • community housing business plan.

Indigenous migration and mobility

ACIL Tasman is helping governments and business to assess the likely patterns of indigenous migration and mobility in remote Australia. Our work is challenging past assumptions that policies securing services, jobs and programs for remote Aboriginal communities should based on a premise that Aboriginal people will continue to live in all these communities. Our research is showing that in many cases people are moving and are likely to move into regional centres. The policy issues under such conditions change dramatically, with the attendant difficulties that arise in housing and integrating people with few skills.

Regional development and infrastructure

ACIL Tasman has consulted extensively on regional economic development, and infrastructure and services required to support it. Many of these assignments include consideration of Indigenous development issues and strategies.

Governance

ACIL Tasman has advised state governments, Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination and local governments on governance issues in Indigenous communities and regions.
