John Söderbaum has over 30 years of experience in the energy and environment sector within government, the private sector and international organisations. He has worked on a wide range of issues related to the supply and use of energy and the environmental implications of energy use, including climate change. He has an excellent understanding of energy and greenhouse policies and programs adopted both in Australia and overseas.

Prior to re-joining ACIL Tasman in early 2008 he was the Science and Technology Adviser for the Department of Resources Energy and Tourism. Before then he worked as a senior consultant for ACIL Tasman and prior to that he worked for the International Energy Agency.

Much of his work has been at the interface between the public, private and academic sectors and is experienced in achieving outcomes that are accepted by all stakeholders even where views may initially differ considerably. He is well respected in scientific circles as evidenced by his role as co-chair of the International Energy Agency’s Ad Hoc Group on Science and Energy Technologies. He is a member of the H1 National Fusion Facility Board and the IEA’s Expert Group on Science for Energy (EGSE). John was the only private sector scribe at the 2020 Summit.

John has a first class honours degree in Science from the University of WA and a doctorate from the Australian National University
