An additional 180,000 skilled workers will be required in Western
Australia by 2016, a report based on ACIL Tasman economic modelling
has found. The WA State Training Board’s ‘Beyond the Resources Boom’
report was released on 23 August. The project used economic modelling
to provide a range of economic and labour forecasts for Western Australia
to 2016, based on different outlooks for the resources industry. Overall,
the analysis found that it would take a severe downturn in the resources
sector to
cause growth in demand for mining and construction related occupations
to be slower than average employment growth. The Western Australian
economy is unlikely to be facing a boom-bust scenario in the short
to medium term, however. It is more likely that WA will experience
a more gradual softening from the current strong growth in demand
for its commodities and products.
