  • Queensland Government appoints ACIL Tasman to assess Aurukun bauxite/alumina project

    The Queensland Government has appointed ACIL Tasman to undertake an economic assessment of the proposed Aurukun bauxite/alumina project on Cape York. ACIL Tasman will conduct an initial baseline assessment of the economic characteristics of existing bauxite/alumina industry and develop a methodology for economic assessment of the Aurukun Project for when the project is defined.

    This work is one of a number of studies being conducted by the Government to inform potential developers and assist in assessment of bids with a view to appointing a preferred developer in early 2006.

 

 

 

 

  • Northern Territory gambling research team to include ACIL Tasman

    A research team from Charles Darwin University and ACIL Tasman has won a Northern Territory Government grant to undertake research into gambling in the Territory.

    The CDU team from the School for Social and Policy Research is headed up by geographer Dr Martin Young and includes demographer Tony Barnes, economist Ibtisam Abu-Duhou and psychologist Dr Mary Morris. They have joined forces with ACIL Tasman’s Jeffrey Rae and Dr Peter Johnson to undertake the research.

    Over the next 12 months, the CDU team and ACIL Tasman will conduct research on:

    • The prevalence of gambling in the Territory – identifying gambling activities in the community and who is gambling by categories such as age, socio-economic status, cultural background, place of residence, etc.
    • The impact of gaming machines in the community – looking at the impact of both casino-based and community-based gaming machines and their positive and negative effects on the community.
